Anyone know WHY the 266 FSB Athlon 2600 is MORE than the 2600 @ 333 MHZ?

I'd assume the 266 is a harder to find/older part and that usually drives the price up since they don't make them anymore.

yup, it's simply not being produced anymore...no point in getting it either.

Or maybe its a misprint seeing as how the 2500's are more expensive than that 2600. :crosseyed:

Just bought 512 of PC3200 DDR400 Crucial RAM. This proccy is the last piece I need.
/SPENDING SPREE!!!!/
hehehehe
Just bought a HDTV on Sunday, too.

So, you'll be playing soon Pere?

Very soon, my brother. ;)
OK, another question.
AMD ATHLON XP 2800 runs at 2.083 GHZ
AMD ATHLON XP 2700 runs at 2.17 GHZ.
WTF?!?!?!?!?!?!

Is 1 the barton core and the other the Thoroughbred?
and do they have the same cache?
and what are the FSB speeds?
Peregrine

OK the original answer to my question up top is one has a 512 cache the other 256.
But I'm even more confused by the 2700\2800....
The ones in the photo above.
Both are 333.
The 2700 is a Barton. Don't know what the 2800 is.
But everywhere I look those are the quoted speeds of those proccy's.

The 'slower clockwise' one is more expensive also.
Love AMD but they can shove thier naming convention!!

OK...you got me!
but one does say barton and the other doesn't.

Regardless of what AMD CPU you buy, make sure it's Barton core. That 512k L2 cache gives you quite a bit more performance. Depending how you want to do things Pere, you might want to consider the 2500. It's $85 OEM, and you can get a really nice HSF for about $30 (look on Newegg for the Coolermaster Aero7+). With retail box, it's $90 & includes a stock HSF. It's stock-clocked at 1.83GHz, but it's been reliably OC'd to 3000 and 3200 speeds in most scenarios (the 2500 is essentially the same chip as the 3200, but with a different silkscreen. here's a good review article (http://www.hexus.net/content/reviews/review.php?dXJsX3Jldmlld19JRD02MTQ)). Dunno how it'll do on your system, of if you can even unlock it to OC on that mobo. If 1.83GHz isn't good enough, look at the 2600 or 3000 Barton cores... but you'll pay a lot more for the extra few KHz.

I think Barton are also more overclockable if you are into that sort of thing. I 'd rather have raw speed then fidle around with pencils and soldering irons and possible processor fires/explosion.
The nerd down the street living in his parents basement can deal with that stuff.

Come on come on help me out help me out. ;)
I got the mobo monday, got the RAM today ALL I NEED is a processor and I'll have a computer again.
In my mobo manual it says it supports AMD CPU's @ 128 and 256 Cache. I'm an IT guy, I really should know this, but the cache is physically on the chip, right? Hence ON-DIE?? It's an older mobo so can I assume it WILL accept a 512 Cache chip, but the manual was printed before 512 was common???
Scummy if the 2500 is so overclockable wouldn't the 2800 be more so?? (Barton)?
I'm coming from my toasted AMD 2200 which is 1.7 GHZ. The 2500 is like 1.9 GHZ. I really wanted to break the 2 GHZ 'barrier' this time - stock, but I'm not above OC'ing. I guess this mobo is decent at OC'ing.

Hmm... I don't know if that mobo will let you overclock the 2500's or not. Most (if not all) the overclocks I've seen for the 2500 are on Asus or Abit nForce2 boards. Those particular mobos "unlock" the CPU for overclocking. On other platforms, I've heard rumors that you have to use a little strip of graphite or solder to connect something... which I would NOT recommend... too much risk of damage.
2800 vs 2500... dunno how the OC's will compare, but keep this in mind:
The 2500 is the SAME chip as the 3200... just with a different silk screen and lower settings, plus a little conductor has been cut to "lock" the chips. Specific mobos can "unlock" the 2500.
The 2800 is a different chip design, and a different production run. I'm assuming you can OC it, but I'm not sure. In your case w/your mobo Pere, you might just want to get the 2800 CPU for ease of mind, then if you want see if you can push it a little bit.

One more thing I had to buy (which I just did) is a new headset. Some of you may remember mine died on me.
And yeah, Slag, I spent more than $6.00 this time. hehehe ;)

Nice, now you just need to polish those skillz. ;)

Let the polishing begin!!!!
w00t!!!!
Got my proccy today. System is at home, complete, waiting for me to slap in the 2600.
It's a 1.9 GHZ though. :( Thought it was going to be 2-something. Well I've discovered that the Barton chips run at a slightly lower speed than the T-bred's do. Wierd but OK.
And I honestly SWEAR I did not purposely time my return to coincide with teh demo. ;)
w00ty-w00t.
Unfortunately I cannot play with it very much tonight. Have plans that I couldn't get out of. However (if all goes well) you can switch me back to active effective tomorrow when I will commence my UT2 (or 3???) marathon when I get home from work.
Will let you all know for sure tomorrow. I'll have just enough time to put it in and see if it boots tonight.
