OK, call me old fashioned but I was thinking of setting up my pedals again since I haven't even tried them out with UT2 yet.
For those not familiar with this peculiarity I have, I used the pedals for foreward/backward movement (acceleration pedal: foreward, brake pedal: backward) for Unreal and UT1. I decided to switch to the keyboard for UT2 because of all the special moves adrenaline combos etc since dodging is very tricky with the pedals.
The problem is, they aint workin right. First of all this is mah sys specs:
P4 2.4
Asus P4PE
512MB RAM
GF4 4200 64MB 8x
(tried both onboard game port and SB PCI128 game port)
MS Sidewinder ForceFeedback Wheel (game port)
win2k professional
I've played UT1 on this system with the steering wheel connected to the onboard gameport and, even though the response from the onboard gameport is a bit mushy compared to the sound card, it was working just fine.
This is what happens in UT2: For some reason, it seems that UT2 maps the whole y-axis on the acceleration pedal only. The brake pedal is useless. So to stand still, one has to keep the acceleration pedal depressed halfway down, to move backwards released and to move forwards pressed all the way down. This of course is not very practical.
I tried playing around with the joystick settings in UT2, with the win2k joystick calibration, I even googled and finally, yesterday I sent an e-mail to ut2003bugs about the issue. I haven't received a reply yet and I'm betting I probably will never receive one so I decided to ask you guys for help. I know that probably no one will be able to solve the problem but maybe someone can tell me who can help me out. Or if there's another email @epic that is a tech support one. Or whatever :)

looks like the ut2003bugs email addy you used is your best bet. i wouldn't be surprised if you are the only person in the world who plays FPS games with foot pedals. :)
if they won't respond and even google won't help, then i guess you're shit outta luck. :/

I've got a logitech forcefeedback joystick and if I could come up with a good way to use that I would. So if you can get your pedals to work that would be cool.
Do you have to enable the joystick option to get them to work?

Yeah, a steering wheel is like any other joystick: wheel = x-axis, pedals = y-axis.
I guess I'm going to have to spam utbugs then.
Does anyone else here have a steering wheel by any chance?

Excellent!! Yay! \o/
You wanna connect it up and tell me if the brake pedal works for backward movement?
Some settings you ought to check in your user.ini:
JoyX=
JoyY=Axis aBaseY SpeedBase=32768.0 DeadZone=0.4 Invert=-1
JoyZ=
JoyR=
JoyU=
JoyV=
JoySlider1=
JoySlider2=
Also edit your UT2003.ini, search for Usejoystick=False and change False to True.
thx man

I think he's kidding, Pope.
I have a steering wheel and 2 pedals. It's the cheaper Microsoft one, USB. Not sure if that would even be recognized.

Well, I have spent more than 5 hours to try to get my car connected to my computer but with no luck :(
But this I can tell you. If I use the brake pedal when I drive, my car just stops and stands still. It won't run backwards :/

I think your brake pedal is b0rked, have you tried contacting the Saab tech support? Or you could try and download the latest drivers for your car.. Oh wait, sorry. YOU are the driver, maybe it's just you :P

Now, be a dearie and be so kind as to check that out for me if you can. Please :tumble:. The settings are in the previous post which was to help Swedix connect his Volvo to his PC and play UT from his garage :P .
The worst that can happen is the problem that I have. I already said it, but the steering wheel is just like any joystick. Oh, btw, the MS steering wheels are considered very good pieces of hardware. Some say that the one you got is better than the (expensive) force feedback one because they claim FF is a bunch of shit anyway.
If you do please also post your sys specs (especially OS).
PS: the rest of you are a bunch of jokers with Swedix as your captain :P

I like my forcefeedback joystick. However when I was playing mechwarrior4 I only used FF when I was playing offline. When I played online I would disable the FF simply because it puts you at a disadvantage( You can't let go of the stick and continue to move in a straight line since the FF will throw you around).
If they had only enabled FF for damage or specific events other than movement I would have been happy.
It does add to the game but when it puts you at a disadvantage people won't use it.

Neither do I have a SAAB or a Volvo. Maybe that's my problem.
I think my Opel is incompatible with UT2003 :???:

You guys crack me up. I'm the Saab freak, Jani.
I'll try it this weekend, Pope. XP is my OS.

Soooo, did you get to try it out then? :D
Any news, any news? :rolleyes2: :rolleyes2:
BTW, do you use any configuration software for it or just XP control panel stuff? Also, what type of plug is used to connect the pedals to the wheel?
On Saturday, I opened my pedals to find that the second spring was also broken. The first broke about a year after I bought the steering wheel. I use these springs I buy at a tools/hardware store :uptosomething:. Basically, these pedals are nearly worthless now so I'm thinking: if I a normal MS wheel (not FF) with USB works well with UT2k3 and it has the same type of connection between pedals and wheel as my FF gameport one, I can always use the gameport one for FF enabled games :D.

Ah, Damn, I knew I was forgetting something.
Will try it tonight. I swear.
I don't install any extra software. XP finds it and loads the drivers just fine.
The cable between the two kind of looks like a phone cable, almost.

OK, they are hooked up. Fired up the game.
It works. Accelerate = FWD, Brake = BAC
FWD-DODGE not that hard, actually. Hmmmmmm
Turn Left, strafe left, turn right strafe right
weapon buttons mapped to keys on wheel
There is a problem, though. I can't look up. I am constantly looking at the ground. I can fight it to look up, with the mouse, but it snaps back down when I let go.

Excellent news!!
I'm off to get a new steering wheel :D :D
The problem your're having has to do with not having deleted one of the joystick settings. Check to see that your settings are as I've given them in one of my previous posts in this thread.

Roger that, I'll try it.
I DO like this MS wheel/pedal. Didn't mean to imply I don't.
I was actually pretty impressed with it. Especially with MIDTOWN MADNESS 2. I was surprised to see that the more you depress the accelerator, the faster the car would go. Like a real car. Not just a toggle ON OFF.

LOL Perry, analog input is the most important feature of a joystick/wheel :D. The reason you can't drive a car worth shit using a keyboard is cause you're either standing on the accelerator (causes wheel spinning which is not a good thing when you wanna be quick) or not pressing it at all - or - you've either turned the steering wheel all the way (which causes movement towards the tangent rather than on the path you wish to move on - dunno what the right term is in english) or not at all.
Anyway, I went out and bought that MS Sidewinder Precision Racing Wheel so now I'm back to normal Pope action - ph333333r :P. Tried it out, works fine although I had to install the software for it to work (I'm on win2k so there may be a difference with winxp in this aspect). I'm thinking that if I had installed the software for the old wheel I have, it may have worked. But taking into account that both springs are broken and I was using mods I guess it was worth the money. :crosseyed:
