What the hell is going on with my computer?

I'm running Windows XP. First my CD drive disappeared. Now it appears under drives, but it won't recognize any CD I put in there. When you pop a CD in it spins for like 20 seconds, then opens again. The drive will not stay closed, even when empty. It's a Creative 52X, by the way.

I think the drive is hosed. (This was not brought on by anything I can tell, I haven't done anything major to the computer for a long time.) I may buy a DVD drive to replace it.

Has anyone ever heard of such a thing?

On another IDE note, would there be any problem with replacing my 3.5 floppy drive with another hard drive? I never use the friggin thing, and my hard drive is almost full for some reason (it contains "some" pr0n). You only get 4 IDE devices so I was thinking 2 hard drives, a DVD and my Iomega drive.

Nooch.

you should ditch the Iomega and put a hard drive(hdd) in there instead. Zip drives (Im assuming) are way out of date, plus you can get external zip drives.

No you can't put a hard drive on a floppy controller either.

And I don't know what's wrong with your CD-ROM, how to fix it, or if it's fixable. But I used to have a DVD-ROM, and it did some weird stuff before it eventually died.the tray would get stuck on the spinner thing, and only open half way. Had to take a butter knife in to open it. If you do decide to buy a DVD-ROM, I suggest the Panasonic DVD-106s Slot loaded DVD-ROM. 16x/40x, low seek time, low spin time, vibration reduction, and its sexy :)
It performs better than my 48/16/48x CD-burner.

I have nothing but bad experience from Creatives CD-readers.
But this might also be a driver issue. Maybe you need to update your chipset drivers.

And as Fu says, you can't replace your floppy with a hard drive.
And belive me, a floppy drive is sometimes very useful.

Is 'DMA' checked if You look at Your CD's properties?
If so, try unchecking it. I had similar probs and unchecked the 'DMA' and now it works flawlessly.
