The [Ci] sig-makin' thread

Who wants a siggy???
I was going to make sigs for all the ACi guys, but I don't want to if noone wants them. So, I thought I'd make a thread and you guys can post if you want me to make you one. I am getting QUITE good with Photoshop and can do about anything with it.

If you want one, I can try and come up with my own, or you can make suggestions, or supply a picture. Whatever. If you want the actual Carpeimperium logo from our website, let me know. I have a transparent one ready to insert.
Working on Fu's now. I started one for Omi, then noticed he had one. I'll finish it, and upload it anyway, since I'm about done.

ECi guys, you have a talented sigmaker in Sehkmet. I took the liberty to add his name, without asking, because I know/think he'd be up for it.

A thunderstorm, a big black panther (it's a cat, right!). I was just going to use a picture of a big black cloud. Thought that might be cool.

Actually, Omi, before you changed your name I had, what I thought, was one of my better ideas. I was going to use the Pink Floyd hammers as a backdrop. I had just found the perfect picture to use, and you changed your name. LOL

However (lol, there's always suggestion when setting up somone's sig ;) ), I was kinda thinking of having my name in 3d steel letters or something like that. I really like the lightening affect but would like to see what you had in mind regarding a big black storm cloud.

Over a buddies house, using his Apple Powerbook. Wanted to see how these sigs looked on an Apple.
WOW! This thing has an awesome screen on it. All the sigs look great.
I'm REALLY pleased about how Omi's turned out. That purple\chrome one was really a lot of work. The chrome was more difficult than the background was! Looks cool, though. Hope you like it.

Rup, I saved the seperate files I used to make that. So, I can easily add a background. I like it with the black. I think it draws the attention right to where you want it to go. But if you want a background, let me know.

Jani, yours just is not coming out right AT ALL.
Too hard to fit everything I want into such a small 'canvas'.
Put the character in, then the grafitti behind him, and you can't tell what it says.

Although, it's still hard to find just the right picture. Many times as I'm looking for a certain one, I'll come across something (like Necro's) that makes me change the sig that I had in mind. I was looking for a good clean shot of some tombstones. You'd be surprised how hard it is to find acceptable ones.

My original plan for Necro was some tombstones. I was going to put names on them, like [Ci]Peregrine. Tried for a LONG time, but just couldn't find a good use-able shot.

Re-reading the thread.
This didn't come out right. I didn't like invent a new effect. When you create an effect that you like in photoshop you can save it, and re-use it later with just a click. You build your OWN stable of effects. That's what I meant. I created my own new effect for my own stable. Not like I invented something new.


I can't take text out, Duo, so unless you have just the background image???

One suggestion?? Play around with the transparency a bit more, and re-arrange the layers. Make the fades between the pics a little less apparent.
You should try the GIMP, Duo. And anyone else that wants a free Image editing proggie. 100% free and does 90% of what Photoshop can. AND there are just as many tutorials for it one the web.

Here's a breakdown of ways I know to do this....

I'll highlight each part of the process:

STEP 1: VIDEO CAPTURE

A) CAPTURE FROM A DVD

The absolute easiest way I have found to capture scenes from a movie for use in an avatar is by playing back a DVD in CyberLink PowerDVD, which has a screen capture tool and a frame by frame playback "step-forward" feature on the player. capture |step-forward |capture |step-forward ...easy.

B) CAPTURE FROM QUICKTIME

Quicktime movies work good, too , especially if you want stuff thats not out on DVD yet and you don't want to pay for a rental, etc...

To use Quicktime, you need a standalone file and not a streaming file. A streaming file will not work...apple protects those. Most of the trailers on Quicktime's website are streaming...so you have to look for a site who has a standalone file...or hope the movie site offers a downloadable version (many do). I got the matrix one from fileplanet (oh yeah, game trailers work great too :)).

In order to use QT trailers, you have to have a program you can rip/capture the scenes out as stills. The best is to buy Quicktime Pro and export the frames straight from the file. (You have to use in/out points around the clip you want).

C) CAPTUE WITH VIDEO EDITING SOFTWARE

If you have a video editing software tool, like adobe premiere, you can use a program caled RADTOOLS (http://www.radgametools.com/down/bink/radtools.exe) (free) to convert the quicktime into an AVI (
(hen you convert, it will ask right before it starts what compression you want to use...I suggest you use Indeo 4.5, since its new enough to give you a decent quality to file size ratio, and almost all video editing programs will be able to read it.)

Import the avi into your video editing software and use it to capture the scene you want (use in/out markers around the clip you want and then export the workarea as a jpg, tiff or bmp sequence)


D) OUT OF OPTIONS?

If you don't want to do that, the next best way is to get RADTOOLS (http://www.radgametools.com/down/bink/radtools.exe)
and use it to convert the entire quicktime movie into frames (this takes a decent amount of time & space to do). The only problem with this is that it will take you a bit of time to find where the scene you want is..and then, you will need to delete all those other stills so you only have the scene you want.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

STEP 2: IMPORT INTO ADOBE IMAGEREADY

Now then, from this point on, i will assume you have somehow found a way to capture stills of the scene you want.

Adobe ImageReady comes with Photoshop 5.5 and higher. I use Photoshop 7, so my version is newer, but the basic functions are there to make a gif.

First off, you need to make sure all of your captures are in a Folder all by themselves.

Go into ImageReady, and do File|Import|Folder as Frames
and choose the folder where alll the captures are.

Now you have all of your captures in a GIF sequence, and imported as layers as well.


STEP 3: MAKING THE GIF

First thing to do is to crop out the exact scene you want, and then resize it to be a sig friendly size. To crop, use the Marqee tool (M or top left icon on the thin tool plaette) to select the part of the scene you want, and then go to Image|Crop to crop it.

To resize, got to IMage|Image size...

Now then, you can apply effects to any and all these layers. You can add new layers..new layers with effects, blending, ...even single layers that can animate over the scene. The amount of things you can do is too vast for me to go into, but heed these few basic rules.

If you add a layer, it will add it to all of the frames. ....it may be that you don't want it to do that. so, to remove it from multiple frames after you have added the layer, use control-click and select the frames from the animated sequence, and then go to the layer(s) you want to be invisible and select the "eye" and it will go away for those frames.

Editing a layer's properties, which inlcudes position and effects, only applies to the frame(s) you have selected, so make sure you have all the frames selected if you want to reposition a graphic or apply an effect that you want to use in all of the frames.

you know what...it probably would be better if you just ask me a question on something you run across...ill add the question and answer here for others...

STEP 4: EXPORTING YOUR GIF (FILE | SAVE OPTIMIZED AS)

Ok, now then...you need to export the gif and you want it to be a file size under 250k...at least, that's my opinion :)

so, you better get unattached to the way it looks now. It's gonna look worse. You are going to have to use 256 colors or less and probably a hell of a lot less frames.

Getting your animation down to size is a fine balance of colors and frames. The less colors you use...the more frames you can have.
For example..janiwashere's is only 16 colors, but is 20 frames..so it looks smooth. Flame's is 16 colors too, but its only 14 frames because it has so many changes in colors between frames.

To remove a frame, simply select the frame from the animation palette and then select the little trash can icon that's on the same palette to delete it.

To adjust colors is very easy. Simply find your Optimize palette (should be somewhere on your screen) leave Settings alone, and instead choose GIF
from the first dropdown menu on the top left of the palette. You can set colors to the right of that...and the type of gif you want. I usually use Perceprtual, Adaptaive or Selective...whichever looks better.

When you have it like you like it, save it by doing the folowing

File|Save Optimized As..

click save and you are done :)

Let me know If you have any probs with any of these steps...there are still many other ways to capture a video sequence...etc.

Since you have gotten this far...try a few of these out for fun.

1. Each layer has blending properties. Play around with that feature...it makes for some cool effects :)

2. Add various effects to a specific layer using Layer | Layer Style (like a dropshadow, bevel or glow, for example)

I love doing this kind of stuff...great to see you having fun as well. I'll catch you on irc and we can play around with other ideas :D

Hey rocket..sorry I haven't replied. Using the Animatrix for clips is a great idea :)

Looks like you have it down...although id reduce the frames and color depth (use like 16-32 colors/adaptive)

also, you can use a blend tool (its on the animation panel) to blend the first frame and last frame together and make new frames that smoothen the transition.

Then tryout the speech recognition and say 'alpha taunt' or whatever the various taunts are.
